Whether seated indoors or enjoying the relaxed outdoor patio, the atmosphere invites guests to unwind and indulge in generous portions crafted from time-honored recipes that have delighted locals for years.

The menu is an exciting voyage through Asian-Pacific influences blended with traditional American diner staples. Highlights include the irresistibly fluffy Macadamia Nut Pancakes that offer a tropical sweetness with every bite and the uniquely satisfying Uncle Danny’s Fried Rice with Two Eggs, a perfectly balanced comfort dish rich with local flair. For those craving savory creativity, the Kim Chee Fried Rice and Fried Min Noodles — stir-fried with char siu, Portuguese sausage, smoked ham, egg, and crunchy fresh vegetables — deliver a burst of umami and spice that dance on the palate.

Big City Diner’s famous Big Braddahs Loco Moco and the Original Loco Loco Moco are must-tries, showcasing the quintessential Hawaiian plate lunch with flavorful hamburger patties swimming in rich gravy atop white rice and eggs cooked just right. Meanwhile, the Mac & Cheese Burger unites two comfort food favorites with ooey-gooey cheese alongside tender, juicy burger patties, creating a mouthwatering sensation.

Adventurous eaters will find the Tequila Chicken Portabello Mushroom Stack and the Guava BBQ Ribs (slow-roasted to fall-off-the-bone perfection) are standout dishes that combine bold, island-inspired flavors with expert preparation. Seafood lovers will appreciate the freshness of the Pacific Islander Fresh Catch, pan-seared and glazed with a zesty Japanese red ginger-lime chili butter sauce that invigorates every bite, paired with crisp sautéed vegetables for balance.

For health-conscious diners, Big City Diner thoughtfully includes selections like the Healthy Big Breakfast with scrambled egg whites, grilled Gardenburger, and steamed brown rice, as well as the Ultimate Tofu-Veggie Omelette bursting with fresh, local vegetables and smothered in quality cheeses. These dishes prove that indulgence and nutrition can harmoniously coexist in a diner setting.

Customer reviews reveal a consistent theme of satisfaction with both the food and service. Charmie Rose praises Big City Diner as one of the island’s longest-standing eateries, honored for maintaining not only its delicious signature dishes but also its warm, attentive service through the years. Crystal Ignacio’s group enjoyed their meal thoroughly, noting attentive staff and the pleasant experience of dining on the patio with a sizable gathering. Julia Vaughan’s mention of the “delicious meatloaf and mashed potatoes” alongside the appealing sight of ribs captures the homestyle heart of the menu perfectly.

Of course, not every dish hits the mark for everyone—a few patrons mention that some plates, like the chicken cutlets, lean toward milder seasoning, which can be adjusted at home. This honest feedback only adds to Big City Diner’s charm, reflecting a kitchen willing to serve simple, unpretentious comfort food that honors tradition without overcomplicating flavors.

Ultimately, Big City Diner is a genuine slice of Hawaiian dining culture, where decades-old recipes meet heartfelt hospitality. Whether you’re craving giant pancakes that melt in your mouth, a robust loco moco, or one of their innovative riffs on fried rice and noodle dishes, this spot is an essential stop in Waipahu for both locals and visitors seeking a satisfying, memorable meal with island soul.

One of the longest, best standing restaurants on island that have been around for YEARS! and every time still yet when we go, they never fail to deliver the best dishes and the best customer service that they can provide along with some of the oldest recipes that have been around for a long time that most locals enjoy to this day. If you're a tourist looking for one of the best local restaurants, this is one stop you don't wanna miss.

Meatloaf and mashed potatoes were delicious, and my partner got ribs, which looked really good

The food was delicious, staff was friendly and attentive. There were 13 people in our party and some of their food came out later. We sat outside in the patio and it was nice.

The food actually became better with age. So I ordered food to go and it actually tasted better as leftovers the next day. I hate when I have to add seasoning to a restaurant dish but it really needed it. I ordered the chicken cutlets with brown rice and the bread pudding without ice cream. The cutlets were a little bland even though it had a mushroom gravy. I also had French onion soup it was savory. I thought the extra cost for the added ice cream for the bread pudding was too much and I already had some at home. It really needed the ice cream because alone it is mediocre. It was an interesting take on bread pudding. I did like the macadamia nuts. I could not figure out the cream. Definitely different than the bread pudding we make it the south.

The food is going to vary depending on what you order. I have had multiple things and they are all pretty good, but I can honestly say I doubt I ever get a burger again. The steak and shrimp was really good. The steak cooked at the right temp that I ordered, so that’s def a plus! Good atmosphere and great service. I ordered to go and the server that took my order was new. She was super nice and extremely helpful. While waiting on my food I have three different servers ask if I needed anything. I would def recommend this place.

Went with my mom. Ordered the chicken cutlets with mushroom sauce. Good portion size, rice and excellent tossed salad. Friendly waitress, excellent service. Paz was outstanding.
